As far as compassion, I strongly disagree that we haven't seen Snape
show any--admittedly his most compassionate moments may have had
*other* motivations, but that doesn't mean that compassion was
absolutely *not* a motive--for example, in PS, Snape's counter-curse
to keep Harry from falling off of his broom has been brushed off as
just having been done so Snape could even himself with James for
saving his life and no longer be indebted in anyway, and while I'm
sure that he was conscious of this, I really believe that there was at
least some tiny spark of compassion somewhere deep down inside. And
there is the way he reacts to the trio in PoA when they say that
Sirius is innocent--he may not be kind or warm, but there's something
about the way he believes that they have been confunded that has
always struck me as--I don't know exactly, it's just somehow always
given me the impression that he sort of meant well in regards to that
whole situation...
