I have always wondered the same thing. I think it has something to do 
with James and Lily. Actually I think it has to with Lily being of Muggle parentage. Tom Riddle wasn't a pure blood. The Longbottoms are purebloods. 
I think Voldemort chose Harry because of it. Don't forget, LV offered Lily 
her life. She chose to die and protect Harry. I think DD had a lot to do 
with it also.
