I don't know...but, it very well could be a matter of Snape's pride, 
as you say.  He may have thought that Lily pitied him, and that made 
him angry.  It sounds like an angry, emotional outburst due to 
humiliation in front of someone he may have secretly liked rather 
than a deliberate attempt to malign her.  Just a thought.
