Meri adds in: Also it is possible that LV had some form of a mark 
that he left as a calling wherever he went, before he had the Dark 
Mark and the DEs, because we know from JKR that the DEs are an old 
group (and I always assumed that LV sort of took them over for 
himself at some point). Perhaps when people started disappearing or 
being killed in the first war rumors began about who was doing it 
and he slipped his name in somwhere for, oh I don't know, the 
publicity?
