Geoff:
Bear in mind again that it would seem that this happened round about
1944, i.e. during World War II.
Many unusual things happened during that period in all walks of life
and "national security" often hushed them up. Even today in the UK,
there are some facts are only just emerging into the light under that
heading dating from well after the war.
It was probably put into a manilla file marked "Unsolved Cases" and
gradually pushed to the back of a filing cabinet in a police station
somewhere near Little Hangleton.
