Geoff:
Bear in mind again that it would seem that this happened round about 
1944, i.e. during World War II.

Many unusual things happened during that period in all walks of life 
and "national security" often hushed them up. Even today in the UK, 
there are some facts are only just emerging into the light under that 
heading dating from well after the war.

It was probably put into a manilla file marked "Unsolved Cases" and 
gradually pushed to the back of a filing cabinet in a police station 
somewhere near Little Hangleton.
