That's a bit of the Law of the Excluded Middle there, Pippin.  You 
make it sound as if it's a choice between Snape ('motivation' through 
continually poking, unfair treatment in class, and snide commentary) 
or Trelawney or Binns (fakery and indifference).  Harry seems to do 
pretty well in Transfiguration with McGonagall, who is good at 
pointing out failings but not in an extremely personal or snide 
manner.  What about Flitwick and Sprout, where Harry also seems to do 
decently?
