I don't have the books to hand - I'm in a motel room in Gettysburg - but 
doesn't Sir Nick in OotP say something about the ghosts having House allegiances, 
though they cooperate in practice?  And when Harry is asking about Sirius, I 
KNOW Nick tells him that only wizards can become ghosts - which eliminates the 
possibility that the Friar was a Muggle.
