Yeah, he's a jerk all right. But that's not a crime. It's bad karma,
if you believe in that, and he certainly suffers the providential 
justice of JKR's pen, but if he hasn't figured that out in
thirty-five odd years, it's not likely to dawn on him shortly. 

What I've observed in real life is that some people I thought were 
jerks with no redeeming qualities  turned out to have been doing 
things all along  that immensely benefited other human beings, 
for no reason more selfish than that they felt the call.   That's the 
sort of discovery I expect Harry to make about Snape, and I don't 
think it will be at all insipid. But that's just me.
