Me (Fridwulfa):
Life is not really that complicated. Slytherin himself could have taken the 
Veil with him when he left the Castle.
When he dies (steping accidentally to the other side of the veil while 
pacing absentmindedly reading the D. P) his heirs/descendants/ascendants and 
greedy neighbours divide his fortune but no one seems to want the ugly 
thing, too big to keep in the living room, it doesn't really go with the 
curtains and the couch... so, of course, they donate it to the Ministry, and 
there it has been since.
