Remember, Marietta *chose* to become a traitor. She could have left 
Dumbledore's Army and not said anything. Choices.  Very important.  
Her choices weren't in any way restricted or dictated  by the hexed 
parchment, before or after she went to Umbridge -- it merely let the 
other people who would be affected by her choices know what she had 
chosen.  Doesn't Dumbledore say that it's our choices that *show* 
what we are?

I absolutely agree. Marietta brought it upon herself. We don't know 
though how "freely" she made that choice, don't we?

Besides, I am not really concerned about Marietta as character, 
since she is mainly plot device, IMO, but I am definitely concerned 
about Hermione's character, because she is quite well developed by 
now and I do care about her. I want her to do the right thing or at 
least try to do the right thing as much as possible.
