So I guess what I'm asking for is the second sense of "belief"-- in
other words, for people to stop screaming that the ship is completely
impossible. And if you can picture Tom Riddle charming Minerva
McGonagall in *any* sense, Anne, you're already there. <eg
Not really....perhaps I was just too virginal in highschool, but I still
dont think 'charm' automatically would equate to dating/sex/marraige, even
with a 15 year old hormonal boy trying to get his way (Otherwise, would he
not have 'charmed' Ginny into falling in love with him somehow and not just
acting as a sort of shoulder to cry on, which seems to be what he did to
gain her trust?).
Also, we're forgetting something here, and it's been pointed out several
times in other threads. Other then a few quick, 'cute' dating scenes,
Rowling gives barely a nod to dating OR sex--which makes sense if this is
still a book series geared to younger readers...kissing a few times, hints
at serious (at least to a teenager) relationships, a little 'does s/he like
me, does s/he hate me?' angst is the order of the day, but a full out sexual
conquest of another person (which is what you're suggesting if Tom went as
far as marrying Minerva later, after wrapping her around his little dating
finger during high school) probably is not in the works. If Rowling was
writing for those of us above the age of twenty as her primary audience,
then yeah, I'd jump on whole-heartedly....but the fact is, she's still
aiming for teens....and although teens may be able to appreciate a complex
idea like that...it's not found in the literature aimed at them very often,
if at all....(I can only think of two Authors made reqadily available in my
school who had sexually complex situations--Judy Blume, and Anne
McCaffrey....).
So yeah, I can appreciate the 'SHIP' (although shipping is not my thing),
but don't see it happening simply because of the genre and the main age
group it's aimed at (Not to mention Rowling's own reluctance to discuss SHIP
possibilities when asked about them). Now, if Rowling goes on to do more WW
books aimed at us grownups, then I can see a LOT of possibilities that only
happen in fanfic right now....including this particular SHIP.
