Well to be fair Dumbledore is skilled at Occlumency so he would know 
if he was lying or not. And Albus Dumbledore is a very old and wise 
man and a very reasonable man. That mixed with the fact that he is 
good at Occlumency, I am not suprised he could think that Sirius Black 
could be an innocent man
