In my opinion, and I have read these books almost religiously, the 
fact that Dumbledore taught transfiguration does not necessarily 
mean that he was an animagus.  As stated throughout the books, just 
because a wizard has the ability of certain powers, does not mean 
that he would use them. And besides that, let's look to the OOTP to 
the part where Umbridge thinks she has 'busted' Harry about the D.A.
If Dumbledore was an animagus, why not just transfigure then, 
instead of using Fawkes?
