Rob Now:
Unicorn horns do not shed, or they would be called unicorn antlers.
My guess is that since the horns of animals continually grow that
some of the unicorn horn is cut or shaved off for use in potions. I
think(no book with me) in "Fantastic Beasts" Rowling says that they
live for a long time and are friendly toward women. This would
provide the opportunity to gather the unicorn horn.
