Or possibly that the one ghost who said "almost" had just passed the 
century mark, and was therefore unable to taste.  HRH weren't asking 
him about the ability of all ghosts to taste food, just his own.

Personally, I believe that some ghost, at some time, must have been 
able to taste the food or they wouldn't bother having it, or even if 
they did, wouldn't have thought up letting it rot like that.

I think it's a pity they didn't ask Myrtle.
