Carol:
I think that was the whole point of the mirror incident where Harry is
sure he'll be able to talk to Sirius but he can't. Harry knows, and we
know, that the reason Sirius doesn't appear is not that he didn't have
his mirror with him. The fact that he doesn't appear is as close as we
can get without a bldy to proof that he's dead.
