Tonya Here adding a thought to this wonderful discussion!!

I personally think (and thought at first read) that the reason why 
Snape did not light the fire is because he was soo excited to find 
Harry and Ron doing something "expel worthy" and wanted to see it to 
the "expel point" that it never even crossed his mind that it was 
cold and the boys might be cold.  McGonagall being a woman would of 
course notice this first off, the whole nurturing thing woman have.  
I know from my own experiences with my wonderful Husband that he has 
blinders on, it would never occured to him to light the fire for the 
boys if it was him.  

Just my thoughts!!
