This is my first post, so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned 
this.  To me, it looks like her symbol was originally the square 
denoting no wizard parents.  I think JKR then went back and drew a 
star over the square.  If you look closely, you can see the top right 
corner of the square behind the star.  I don't know why it only has 
five points.  Maybe another mood on another day.  Just a thought.
