There is a mention at the beginning of Fantastic Beasts about 
protecting the magical community from witch-burnings.  (However, in 
one of the books in the regular series, it is stated that burning at 
the stake has no effect on a real witch or wizard because they 
perform a flame-freezing charm and aren't injured.)
