I always just assumed that the silver dagger was part of the spell. 
Not having been in Potions class myself, I'm not sure, but some 
things have to be cut with silver... I seem to remember Ron using a 
siver knife to cut something up at one point.  I'll look that up 
tomorrow, when I have better access to my books.  (of course, if 
someone else knows what I'm talking about, feel free to beat me to 
it. ^_^)

So, no, I didn't think that the silver dagger was Slytherin's, or 
even necessarily expensively wrought. Just... silver.
