I've alwas thought that the map had some sort-of artificial intelligence, much
like Godric Gryffindor's hat.
Just as the sorting hat is able to think for itself and categorise the students
according to the ethos of each of the founders, the map may be able to
recognise a charm (?) that is suitably in keeping with the ethos of the
Mauraders...for example, the map was capable of recognising Snape when
he was was commanding it to 'reveal its secret" in PoA (sorry, no reference),
and then proceed to insult him. I always thought that the style of insults were
sufficiently different to recognise each of the Mauraders different
personalities, but I need to go check that...
I think it is possible that the Mauraders used the same charm that Godric
Gryffindor used to imbue the Sorting Hat with brains-even if it was an
immensey complicated charm, they must have been up to it, aftr all, they did
become animagi...
