I am sure it seems obvious, but I have never thought of this before. 
While reading PoA, I wondered exactly why Scabbers/Peter would hide 
in Hagrid's hut. Obviously he knew from making the map that it was a 
dead spot, and would not make it possible for him to be seen on the 
map.
