Voldemort was missing for 30 years, what was he doing?

The time between Hogwarts (Est. 1942) and Voldemorts rist to power 
(1970's) is thirty years! What was he doing for thirty years? Yes, 
yes, I know, magical transformations, associating with the worst of 
wizard kind, etc. 

But, that's a long time, regardless. He killed his father and 
grandparents either before 7th year, or right after. This would 
indicate that he didn't try to have a 'normal' life after Hogwarts. 
Also, his friends had already begun calling him Voldemort, another 
indication that he didn't run off and get married and have kids, 
something I know people have been speculating about, ie, Voldemort 
being a relative of Harry's.
