Not to mention that JKR's other good characters sometimes lie--even
Hermione in the troll-in-the-bathroom scene in PS/SS. Harry even lies
to Dumbledore about not having anything to tell him (Parseltongue,
etc.) in CoS. I'm sure there are other more recent examples, but as
I'm rereading the early books at the moment, that's where my thoughts
are now.

Hagrid does make seemingly factual statements that turn out to be
wrong, notably that all the witches and wizards who went wrong were
from Slytherin (if you think that Peter Pettigrew was a Slytherin,
this example won't work for you, but I'm sure there are others). I
mentioned his inconsistent versions of the flying motorcycle story in
a previous post. I don't think he's lying, but his emotions may have
interfered with the accuracy of his memory. Happens to me all the
time. :-)
