I think the best support may be as pointed out by author John Granger 
on the alchemical references JKR uses heavily: sulphur (Ron) and 
quicksilver/mercury (Hermione- if you have any doubts still, note 
that her name is feminine of Hermes) were known as 'the quarreling 
couple.'  (ref.: _The Hidden Key to Harry Potter_)
