I wonder if there's a case for suggesting that the "Legilimens" _does_ have
some sort of sustained effect.
On my latest tour through the books, I've noticed that there's a single
reference in all three of the earlier ones to the effect that Harry thinks
that Snape can read minds. It's not stressed in any way in the books, in
fact in CoS, our attention is drawn away from it, but just possibly he's had
some ongoing ability there all along which we've been meant to overlook.
But JKR alone knows all
