The Sergeant Majorette says
Ever hear a Marine drill sergeant refer to a gaggle of recruits
as "Ladies"? They still do that.
When I first became aware of the dreaded "n" word, I heard it
defended as a function of a southern accent, no insult intended.
I would not be at all surprised if JKR meant to include a reference
to the patronizing divisiveness of the term "muggle" when she
invented it.
