trials which Harry sees through the pensieve makes me feel that. He 
said something like Snape indeed was a death eater but he turned in 
at great personal cost.
  This means that Snape had indeed become a death eater and later cut 
loose from the outfit.
  Snape's story is proabably the best unexplained mystery in the 
canon and I think the reason why he isn't given DADA job also fits in 
somehow with his death eater story.
