I have been rereading POA and found that Lupin's Vampire essay was assigned 
in April.

Pages 213 and 214 UK version, Snape's Grudge chapter ends with Hagrid sending 
Hermione a note that Buckbeak was sentenced to death, after Lupin tells Harry 
and Ron about the Vampire Essay in Snape's presence. The date is April 20, or 
after that date. On page 161 and 162 of POA UK version, Hagrid gets the note 
from the Ministry about the date of the hearing on April 20. 

Just a side note, Hitler's birthday was April 20.
