And - not that I have my books with me - but there's that remark of 
Sirius in OOP, The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black.  He's 
referring to Regulus, but...

Approximate quote:  "It's a lifetime of service or death" or words to 
that effect.  Which kind of stymies the idea that Snape can just hand 
in his notice or take a sabbatical.
