Not quite what I'm suggesting.
What we call Voldemort is not  just Tom Riddle gone bad, IMO.
I think that Voldemort is the evil spirit that possessed Tom Riddle.
DD suspects that Tom is in there somewhere and is appealing to Tom 
to try and break free. 
That allows Tom the choice you'd like to see; submit to evil or fight
against it.
