Valky wrote a long theory suggesting Voldemort's power is based on 
the general fear of saying his name:

This is an interesting theory, but how would Voldemort have 
created this "spellform" giving him power through the fear of his 
name?  Presumably people came to be afraid of him because of his 
awful actions, how did he get power to do these before he was so 
widely feared?
