Actually, if you go back several thousand posts (I don't really expect
you to), you'll find that I think there were two charms: One, the
"ancient magic" charm that could only be activated by Lily's
self-sacrifice, placed by Lily herself before Godric's Hollow to
protect Harry from Avada Kedavra; the other placed by Dumbledore using
that "blood" sacrifice to grant Harry additional protection as long as
he stays with Petunia. Dumbledore says near the end of OoP that he
placed such a charm; sorry I don't have the exact quote handy, but
it's in the chapter that discusses the Prophecy. (The primary
arguments for the first charm being placed by Lily are that 1) other
mothers, notably Barty Crouch's, have sacrificed themselves for their
children but failed to save them and 2) Lily's skill with charms is
alluded to in several places, notably by Ollivander in SS/PS. But
since your post was about DD's charm, I won't go into that here.) The
second charm is definitely placed by Dumbledore. He says so himself.
