An excellent question. I think the answer is:
1) We've never seen Snape murder anyone, in a Pensieve scene or anywhere
else; we see Sirius and James bullying in considerable and loathesome
detail.
2) Most of us thought much more highly of James and Sirius than we did of
Snape (I almost wrote "all of us," but I forgot about the "Sirius is
responsible for world hunger, AIDs, and the Iraqi war" crowd).
3) So far as I know, no one on this list has been murdered, but apparently
many of them have been bullied.
