Melanie:
An army of House Elves-- that's brilliant. Imagine Voldemort and the 
DEs attack Hogwarts when DD is elsewhere, only to be defeated by 
Dobby leading his fellow house elves into battle, casting spells 
with one hand and punishing himself with the other . . . That would 
certainly justify the amount of "screen time" spent on SPEW, though 
the picture of Hermione in OoP frantically trying to knit tiny elf 
hats justifies itself, really.
