I can't add much to your other ideas, I'm afraid, but one more 
possibility: what about Sirius appearing in the crystal ball? I 
don't remember that happening in the books (I could be wrong, 
though, as usual.) Foreshadowing of the mirror, perhaps?

Carol notes:
In the book, it's Trelawney who sees the Grim, not Hermione, as in the
film:

"'My dear,' Professor Trelawney's huge eyes opened dramatically, 'you
have the Grim!'" (PoA Am. ed. 107)

and it's Hermione who's skeptical ("*I* don't think it looks like a
Grim," same page). I agree that, whoever sees it, it's actually
Sirius. I also think that Trelawney can really see things in the
crystal ball and the tea leaves, but she often misinterprets them,
possibly because she's so afraid of really being a fraud.
