Potioncat:
I don't think it's in the teachers' job description.  We don't see 
McGonagall or Flitwick lurking about trying to protect Harry.  Now, 
if Snape is Potions Master, Head of Slytherin and Chief of Security, 
perhaps it is his duty.  But I don't  think so.  

I think part of what you said is true, "Snape is not the type to 
standby and let anyone be killed if he can help it...."
