Maybe I'm missing the point here but surely that is not in doubt?  I
thought the question was: was Snape telling the Slytherins at
breakfast the cause of Lupin's resignation (that is, he wouldn't have
had to if Snape hadn't said anything) or something that happened at
the same time as Lupin resigned because he felt it was the honourable
thing to do because he hadn't taken his potion?  

I believe it was the latter situation.
