I'm not so sure you can say Lupin put off taking it.  He takes it 
when Snape brings it to him.  If Snape doesn't bring the potion until 
dusk, he can't take it until dusk.  It seems to me Snape was the one 
waiting until the last minute, probably hoping for something to 
happen so he could "out" Lupin.
