SSSusan, I have often wondered that myself.  Plot and content have 
corresponded with the age progression of the child characters, and I 
have always thought that was one of the great things about the 
series - an attribute of JKR's talent.  So I believe it is 
intentional, within the definition of creative intention.  And 
another good question for JKR.
