Isn't one of JKRs other FAQ's Where has he been all this time.
Ok so we are grasping at itsy bitsy slender canon straws for it, but 
hell, I already thought that Pettigrew was at Hogwarts all this 
time, anyway. I mean how often does Harry check to see whose in the 
Chamber of secrets on The Marauders Map. Oh yeah, it doesn't appear 
on the map does it? (Sarcastic drip and evil grin)
MWPP never knew where it was.
