I don't remember the sorting hat wanting to put Harry in Slytherin. 
Harry kept thinking 'not Slytherin', and it seems the hat debated 
with him. I don't believe the hat is fooled at all. It seems the hat 
can look into a person and see the potential (Neville) and then sort 
them to the house to best develop that potential.
