The number 50

Does anyone know of any significance of the number 50 in canon?  I find that I keep coming across the number; ie "...about 50 school rules", "...50 years ago".  I know that there are other examples but I cannot place my finger on them at the moment.  I tried searching the archives but could not find anything.  Is this just coincidence or has anyone else noticed it?
