You may be correct.  In Chapter 20 of POA, after Lupin transforms into a
werewolf, Peter dives for Lupin's wand, there is a bang, then Peter changes
back into a rat.  I'm assuming the bang is Peter breaking his manacle, not
his transformation.

I say this because Sirius, too, had no want on him and used Ron's or someone
else's, and Peter didn't have one when forced back to human form, so he
needed Lupin's to break free of the chain.
