Oooh, Potioncat, I know what you mean.  While I disagree that Snape 
has already been redeemed. I think he is still working on that task, 
but I can see that him shielding the Trio could be one of those 
things which JKR thought of as foreshadowing  of what would happen in 
6 and 7 book.
