If Hagrid had only seen death at Azkaban, I don't think he had much 
time to breed the only tame herd in Britain. I think this is kind of 
an odd point to discuss, considering Hagrid is over 60 years old, and 
was part of the original Order of the Phoenix, he had ample 
opportunity to witness death. Also, if witnessing an animal's death 
would make one see thestrals, then Ron, Hermione, and Neville, and 
presumably Luna, saw the fake Moody kill the spider in DAtDA class. 
They would have seen the thestrals at the end of the book.
