Carolyn:
I wonder if any of the secret passages out of Hogwarts are 
significant here - the four that Filch knows about, not the three 
that Gred & Forge used. Wouldn't be the first time there was an 
underground passage to a graveyard, which, of course, might actually 
be a catacomb.
