While I agree with you that Hogwarts was comfortable in the first two
movies, I think one of the main things to look at is Harry is growing
up. Have you ever noticed that when you're younger, things look
cleaner, brighter and nicer? Harry is beginning to lose his innocence.
In much the same way, the audience loses it with Harry. 

Hogwarts is no longer a bright, happy safe refuge from the world's
troubles. The world's troubles are coming to Harry on all sides. 

Although I have to admit that I thought Hogwarts always looked too
clean for being about 1,000 years old, I did like the old sets, but I
adore the new sets even more.

I am not really arguing the point with you so much as explaining where
I am coming from regarding the movie. :)
