But the only three people who knew that Pettigrew was an Animagus 
were James (dead), Sirius (accused of muder and of being an LV 
supporter) and Lupin (a werewolf and not likely to be trusted). That 
would have been no tip-off at all. 
Meri - who wonders why Pettigrew didn't kill Sirius as well as the 
12 Muggles, as that would have made his plan much more sound...
