[HPforGrownups] How do owls get their names?

I don't recall Harry naming Hedwig in either the first or second book.  I
know that Harry calls her Hedwig but how on earth did she get that name in
the first place?  Could Hagrid have named her when he purchased her for
Harry?
And how did Pigwidgeon get his name/  Curious minds want to know.

Good question! I know Pigwidgeon was named by Ginny, but don't know about
Hedwig!
 
Gina - who still thinks Hedwig is more than an owl!
